The Challenges of Hazardous Materials

A discussion of challenges when storing or using hazardous materials, including crucial early design considerations and how to spot noncompliance issues after construction. The following topics will be covered: Chemical Hazard Classifications, Hazardous Exhaust, Electrical Area Classification, and H Occupancies/Control Area Analysis.

Breanna O’Connell, with ChemE Logic, is a chemist and Professionally Licensed Chemical Engineer with over 20 years of experience in science and engineering.  Breanna’s experience encompasses all stages of design - research and development, feasibility, scale-up, design/build, permitting, construction oversight, and commissioning. She is a subject matter expert in hazardous materials identification, safety, and permitting. ChemE Logic is a woman-owned engineering firm with a focus on preliminary chemical process design and hazardous materials code consulting. ChemE Logic works closely with Architectural, Fire Protection, and Structural teaming partners to ensure all aspects of a project are addressed.

Tanya Wuertz brings problem-solving expertise as a Building and Fire Code Resource with 25 years of experience in the field of Architecture, Engineering, and Construction. Skilled in Technical Project Management, Tanya strategically balances Client, Project, and Jurisdictional requirements by astutely listening and rigorously gathering information to pinpoint the core issue. She is proficient at the development of innovative solutions that succeed through effective verbal, written, and graphic communication to key stakeholders. She also maintains a relationship with a Licensed Fire Protection Engineer, Licensed Chemical Engineer, and Certified Accessibility Specialist (APAC-BE, ICC, ADAC, CASp) to collaborate as subconsultants, depending on what the project requires. As Founder of Code Bird Consulting LLC, Tanya looks forward to working with Design Teams from the perspective that understanding code intent provides an opportunity for compliance innovation.
