How to Prevent Thermal Runaway in Lithium-Ion Batteries
Recent lithium-ion battery explosions have demonstrated how dangerous they can be. This presentation will explain the four stages of battery failure and how to prevent a thermal runaway with proper “Advanced Detection” at the appropriate stage of failure. It will also address why conventional gas detection will not prevent thermal runaway and address best design and layout practices as well as sequence of operation. Lithium-Ion batteries are safe once they’re understood!
Presenter: William Sudah, Honeywell Xtralis
William is a Mechanical Engineer. He lives in South Florida and currently working for Honeywell Xtralis. He has 15 years of experience in gas detection, and he helps engineers with gas detection design and layout as well as sequence of operation. William is also a principal member with NFPA 88A and has been invited on numerous occasions to present to Fire Marshals on safety and design requirements and continues to offer his support to this date.
